A HAMPSHIRE power station which once powered millions of homes has closed after more than 40 years of service.

The oil-powered Fawley Power Station, run by RWE npower, shut yesterday, having opened in 1971.

Despite being a state-of-the-art facility when it first opened, it fell foul of EU directives aiming to reduce emissions across Europe.

The closure was also hastened by the Government’s policy to replace older, less efficient power stations with modern, lower carbon replacements.

Decommissioning and demolishing the plant is expected to take several years.

Some of its 60 staff will remain during the decommissioning work while others will move to new jobs within the RWE group.

RWE is considering a range of new uses for the site, and it may be used as a new power station in the future.
