THEY were among Britain’s best-known and popular twins.

From television appearances and top selling records the Cheeky Girls were never out of the public spotlight.

This weekend, more than ten years after finding fame, the girls make an appearance at a sports complex in Hampshire.

The duo, twin sisters Gabriela and Monica Irimia, are taking part in Fawley’s annual Armed Forces Day celebrations today.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to Gang Warily Recreation Centre for the girls’ free 35-minute performance, after which they will sign autographs and pose for photographs.

Their appearance is being hailed as a major coup for Fawley Parish Council, which is organising the event.

The Daily Echo-backed Help For Heroes is one of the charities that will benefit from the 12-hour fundraising extravaganza, which starts at 10am.

Born in Romania, the Cheeky Girls moved to Britain with their mother in 2002 and shot to fame after auditioning on Popstars: The Rivals.

They had four top ten hits between 2002 and 2004 but are best known for their debut single, Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum), which has sold more than 1.2 million copies worldwide.

In 2005 it was revealed that former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik had broken up with his long-time fiancée, TV weather presenter Sian Lloyd, and was dating Gabriela. The couple got engaged in April 2008 but ended their relationship a few months later.

The Cheeky Girls are due on stage at 8pm.
