TIM Firth’s play about the ladies from a Yorkshire WI and their alternative idea for a calendar to raise money for cancer research managed to mix straight talking Yorkshire pride with bitingly funny, life affirming touches of drama and sadness.
Hamble Players’ surefooted production has managed to encompass all of this, delivering a laugh-out-loud comedy while squeezing a tear from the eye.
Directed with great skill and empathy by Kay Baker and David Humphries, the production was blessed with an excellent cast.
Beverley Sell gave a charismatic turn as the devil may care Chris, while Terry Sell, as the prim retired headmistress Jessie, had some withering one liners.
The disrobing of the ladies was beautifully done, presented with much humour but as a suitably empowering act, making the audience complicit in the sense of achievement and drawing its support for the brave women.
