SOUTHAMPTON man is trekking up Snowdon to help people affected by the crisis in Syria.

Jonathan Martin, pictured, who lives in Freemantle and works in an admin role at the University of Southampton, took a masters in humanitarianism and conflict response at the University of Manchester.

He said: “The reason I am doing this is because I have been following the crisis in Syria very closely over the past two-and-a-half years and it has struck deeply with me the amount of overwhelming suffering the normal, everyday people of Syria are going through.

“I know some of the people who work for Syria Relief and feel that it is a very well-run and able charity doing a lot of good work on the ground in Syria for all those that are in need.

“The appeal is under-funded on a national and international level, much of it due to donor fatigue as the crisis continues to grind on with no obvious end to the conflict on the horizon.

“As nation states bicker and position themselves in regards to the conflict with their own interests at the forefront of any decision-making it is down to the citizens of the world not to forget and to continue to help aid the Syrian people.”

Syria Relief is a Syrian-led charity, who are on the ground in the country aiding internally displaced people regardless of their political/religious or ethnic denomination.

The trek takes place on August 31. To take part or sponsor Jonathan, visit mydonate.bt.com/fund raisers/jonathanmartin1.
