GOSPORT MP Caroline Dinenage has urged parents to get involved in a free healthy lifestyle programme being launched for young children.

She welcomed the scheme, which is being run in Gosport by charity MEND aimed at five to seven-year-olds.

It will encourage children to play in an active way while advising parents on how to take early action to avoid future problems with a child’s weight.

The scheme begins on October 16 at Bridgemary School and runs for ten sessions. Caroline said: “With nearly 20 per cent of Gosport’s Year 6 children classified as obese, estimated obesity levels in our area are much higher than those for the rest of the UK. “It is therefore vital that we tackle the early signs of obesity as soon as they arise.”
