SOUTHAMPTON'S new state-of-the-art research ship has officially been given the royal seal of approval.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has this morning named RRS Discovery at the National Oceanography Centre.
Wearing a burnt orange coat and carrying a brown handbag, she greeted dignitaries before releasing the champagne bottle for the traditional naming ceremony ritual.
The bottle smashed on cue, to the applause of the crowd which included dignitaries and business leaders from across the world.
Her Royal Highness is now taking a tour of the ship.
