WITHOUT doubt it will be the largest display of opposition to Government policy for many years.

Tomorrow’s planned day of action by several public service unions will see thousands of employees across the county taking strike action.

They include Fire Brigades Union (FBU), GMB, the National Union of Teachers (NUT), the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), Unison and Unite.

Schools will close along with courts and other services as local authorities turn their attention to protecting services for the vulnerable as a priority.

For those who can recall the dark days of strike action in the ’70s these will be familiar and unwelcome statistics, yet few can deny many public sector workers feel betrayed by low pay increases and cuts to pensions.

Whether the arguments and tomorrow’s actions will curry favour and, more importantly, sympathy from those working in the private sector remains to be seen.

What the day of action may illuminate further is the fear of a split society between those who work in those two sectors. This is not a good place for a nation to be.
