GREEN-FINGERED pupils are celebrating their work to save rare plants from extinction.
Pupils at Wicor Primary School, in Fareham, are the youngest ‘Plant Guardians’ in the country and the first school to be given the title after painstaking efforts to grow a rare plant paid off.
They cultivated a Canna Cleopatra and from ten plants succeeded in growing 94.
As a result of this success, National Collection holder Keith Hayward donated two rare plants to the school and they were signed up as Plant Guardians of that plant.
They are now working to propagate the rare Canna Chouchou (meaning teacher’s pet), which they had on display when they visited Hampton Court Flower Show to launch the Plant Guardians scheme.
As the campaign is supported by Prince Charles the pupils went to Highgrove to receive their award and take part in workshops. They also met the head gardener.
