THOUSANDS of sailors from across the globe hit the water in a bid to set a new Guinness world record for the biggest ever sailing race.

Bart’s Bash was held in honour of the Olympic gold medal sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, who died in May last year in an accident while training for the America’s Cup.

It saw more than 10,000 sailors representing 745 clubs from 65 countries take to the sea for the simultaneous yacht race which took place in various locations across the world.

And the PSP Southampton Boat Show made sure it was part of the action, with 37 boats with 51 entrants.

It is hoped Bart’s Bash will raise £160,000 for the Andrew Simpson Foundation, which teaches life skills and values to young people between the age of five and 24.

Richard Percy, chief executive of the Andrew Simpson Foundation and brother of sailor Iain Percy, said: “When it was conceived there were about 50 clubs around the UK and that has developed into just under 20,000 over 65 countries.”

As the Daily Echo went to print it was not known if the world record had been broken.
