THERE may be more than three months to go before Christmas.

But sleigh bells are already ringing as traders busily prepare for one of Hampshire’s biggest festive bazaars.

Hundreds of thousands of shoppers are expected to flock to the Southampton Christmas Market when it opens its doors in November.

However, time is running out for businesses hoping to benefit from the merry extravaganza, with nearly three-quarters of its 45 stalls already snapped up.

The bazaar, returning to Above Bar, is set to be the biggest in its five-year history, with gifts, food, decorations and accessories from all over the world.

The market has grown in size year on year, with last year’s event drawing in bumper crowds of more than 200,000 people a week.

Organisers SMT Management are the busy elves urging local traders to sign up for the remaining pitches before it is too late.

They are anticipating that hordes of shoppers will descend on the city from across the south to hunt for gifts for their families, friends and colleagues once the market opens on November 21.

They plan to top the 32 stalls serving customers last year with a wide range of hand-made gifts from Britain, France, Germany, Italy and as far afield as Morocco.

One hugely popular stall set to return is the traditional German bar which was the colourful centrepiece of last year’s bazaar.

It features a special entertainment area decked with fairy lights and decorations for people to soak up the festive ambience while tucking into traditional food and drink.

Musicians set to play include a jazz and an oompah band.

Market organiser Paul Lewis said: “We are really looking forward to it.

“With the economy improving everything’s set for a great Christmas and we wish everyone in the high street well.

“We would like to invite local businesses to come and trade with us.

“We have some very flexible options available on the huts. You could share spaces and share staffing as well.”
