HUNDREDS of joggers and fun-runners braved the wet and muddy conditions to take part in an annual charity race.

More than 600 people lined up on the soggy starting line at this year’s Tidworth 10k, which took place on the Tedworth House polo pitches to raise money for the Salisbury District Hospital’s Breast Cancer Unit campaign.

The campaign, which is part of the hospital’s ‘Stars Appeal’, was launched in September and aims to raise £750,000 to create a dedicated breast cancer unit in Salisbury.

Those who ran in the 10th edition of the popular annual event, which included a separate 3k fun run, came together to raise around £30,000.

That will be added to the £250,000 that has already been collected for the Breast Cancer Unit campaign during the last two months.

Among those taking part in the run was Karen Campbell- Fotheringham, pictured right, who completed the run despite suffering a serious injury just weeks ago.

Karen, from Perham Down, who is part of the multi-disciplinary team at Salisbury District Hospital, said: “I work with the breast cancer department and I think it’s a fantastic cause.

“It’s going to be a brilliant facility.”

After completing the run in one hour and 20 minutes, Karen added: “I didn’t do very well! But I broke my ankle nine weeks ago and only managed about a week or two of training, so I’m quite proud.”

Hospital staff were supported in organising the event by the Tidworth-based Royal Tank Regiment, which helped by putting up the barriers, marking the routes and providing marshals along the course.

Events and community fundraiser for the ‘Stars Appeal’, Gemma Heath, said: “It went really well, it was a great success and a good day as a whole.

“We would just like to thank all those who took part in the event and raised money for the breast cancer unit campaign.

“We would also like to give a special mention to the Royal Tank Regiment who were fantastic in helping us run this event.

We couldn’t have done it without them.”
