POLICE are urging motorcycle and moped owners to be on their guard after a string of motorbike thefts.

Thieves have been targeting these vehicles across the Southampton and Hedge End areas.

In January police revealed it had seen 22 thefts of motorbikes between December 20 and January 15.

Despite the warning issued at the time, since then officers say the thefts have continued Thieves have struck most in Harefield and Sholing areas, but have also targeted bikes in Weston, West End, Hedge End, Netley, Hamble, Botley, Bursledon and Thornhill.

Most of the bikes have been stolen overnight from driveways or front gardens.

Police have issued prevention advice, saying that owners should always lock their bike, should have an alarm and immobiliser fitted, when they leave their bike for some time lock it to something secure, do not leave possessions including helmets with their bike and if possible park in a locked garage.

Inspector Tom Orchard, responsible for policing the Southampton East sector, said: “A large number of the bikes stolen have been found dumped near to where they had been taken from. The offenders may well be stealing the bikes for joyriding.

“Therefore I would ask anyone who witnesses anti-social behaviour relating to mopeds or motorcycles in this area late in the evening to contact us.

“We have been conducting extra patrols in order to disrupt those responsible and as a result two juveniles have been given custodial sentences by the courts.

“We have also been giving targeted crime prevention advice to moped and motorbike owners in the affected areas via social media, signage and calling on bike owners in person.”

Anyone with information about those responsible for motorbike thefts in the area should call the Southampton East Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.
