IT rose from the ashes of an historic mansion that burned down and killed a Hampshire MP 15 years ago.

Tangley House was destroyed by a devastating fire which claimed the lives of the then Romsey Conservative MP Michael Colvin, pictured right, and his wife, Nichola in 2000.

Their deaths shocked the country and stunned villagers whose life had revolved around the ancient house and its lush 800-acre stretch of land near Andover.

But now the estate which is set amid some of Hampshire's most beautiful countryside is up for sale – with a price tag of £15m.

Daily Echo:

The 1,000 degrees Celsius fire, comparative to temperatures found in a crematorium, left little of the interior of the original house, which dated to the turn of the last century.

Daily Echo:

But ten years ago an eight-bedroom Georgian-style mansion was constructed on the foundations of the old house by millionaire property developer Harry Marriott, who is currently registered as an owner.

And now the property, sitting in a huge country estate, has plenty on offer for those with pockets deep enough to become lord of the manor.

It is set in beautiful rolling countryside in the sought-after village of Tangley and the now immaculate house has reception rooms with high ceilings, wonderful views, beautiful gardens, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis court, stabling, five cottages, parkland and woodland of about 1,000 trees.

The walled gardens have been restored to their former glory.

Tangley Parish Council clerk Julia Rennie said: “Harry Marriott very faithfully restored the house pretty much to what it used to look like. He managed his estate well and brought his family up there.”

As previously reported, more than 800 mourners packed into Romsey Abbey in April 2000 for the service of thanksgiving for the lives of Michael (see pictured) and Nichola Colvin.

Daily Echo:

Mourners included MP William Hague and his wife Ffion, former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, Lord Howe of Aberavon, Margaret Thatcher’s husband Dennis Thatcher, senior minister Michael Portillo and many MPs and peers.

Traditionally a Tory stronghold, Romsey was seized by the Liberal Democrats when Sandra Gidley won a by-election in May 2000, following the death of Mr Colvin.

In 2010 the seat was won by Tory Caroline Nokes.

Mr Marriott was unavailable for comment last night.
