A HAMPSHIRE doctor is just weeks away from tackling one of the toughest races in the world.

Dr Peter Haig, a GP from North Baddesley Health Centre, has less than five weeks left before he stands with 700 other competitors on the start line of what is known as the toughest foot race in the world - the Marathon des Sables across the Sahara Desert.

The 44-year-old father-of-two has been training hard for his upcoming challenge and is really looking forward to it.

Over the course of the week-long race Dr Haig will have to cover more than 150 miles through the Sahara Desert, carrying everything he needs from food, fuel, clothes and sleeping bag, as well as safety gear - and temperatures can vary from an average 40C (104F), to more than 50C (122F) in the dunes.

He hopes to raise £5,000 for the official race charity Facing Africa that aims to prevent a disease known as Noma from killing approximately 200,000 African children a year.
