A GIANT dragon ushered in the Year of the Pig.

In a glittering display of dancing, Southampton city centre came to a standstill as hundreds gathered to welcome in the Chinese New Year.

Families watched in awe as the 120ft dragon snaked its way through the streets, chasing the pearl of wisdom.

The Mayor of Southampton, Councillor John Slade, began the celebrations at the Civic Centre by performing the traditional ceremony of dim jing, which involves painting the eye of the dragon.

This symbolic ritual is performed to bring the dragon to life so that it can perform and bring good luck over the next year.

The Chinese Association of Southampton, supported by the council and Waterside Dragon Dance Club, organised the spectacle, which included unicorn and lion dances and a martial arts display.

Pete Hutchings, 46, of Portswood, Southampton, said: "It is great to see the different cultural representation of the city coming together to celebrate this colourful event."

Sam Jordan, 35, from Bassett, added: "Our children have been learning about this at school so it is great to show them that it actually happens for real members of their community."

Angie Mo, from West End, went to London last year for the celebrations but was impressed by what Southampton had to offer. She said: "It has been an absolutely fantastic cultural show.

"I decided to stay in Southampton for the celebrations and I haven't been disappointed.

"In London you could not see anything but today we have had a great view."
