A 33-YEAR-OLD man has lost his fight for life after suffering serious head injuries following an incident in the city centre.

Gary Becheley, who was a Southampton resident, was injured during an incident in Above Bar Street around 10pm on Saturday.

Mr Becheley was rushed to the city hospital's neurological unit but died yesterday lunchtime from his injuries.

Today his family were trying to come to terms with their loss but were described as "deeply shocked" by what had happened.

Detectives were today continuing to investigate the scuffle, which is thought to have been seen by several people.

Throughout yesterday the scene was cordoned off by police tape and officers were present ensuring that there was no interference with potential evidence.

Hampshire police's forensic team spent several hours scouring the scene with a police photographer.

The incident happened when the area was busy with revellers coming in and out of bars and pubs in the area.

Those who were in the immediate area at the time have been interviewed by police but it is understood there are still many witnesses to be spoken to.

Police have launched a major inquiry, codenamed Operation Tavistock, which is involving around 20 officers.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, DI Nigel Lecointe, based at Hulse Road, said: "The man sadly died at lunchtime yesterday and we are now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

"He was a local man and the news has left his family extremely distraught. They are coping as well as can be expected but are deeply shocked by what has happened."

Speaking about the investigation he added: "This is an absolute tragedy and we are carrying out a very thorough inquiry into the circumstances that led to this man's death.

DI Lecointe confirmed that a 32-year-old man had been arrested following the incident but has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
