IT WAS a name that stood out on the ballot paper at the Eastleigh by-election – but it won’t be seen at this year’s General Election.

Ray Hall, the Hampshire man behind the Beer, Baccy and Crumpet Party, says he won’t be standing after election officials deemed his party’s name too “offensive”.

The 75-year-old from Hedge End had tried to change it to Beer, Baccy and Crumpets in a bid to stand in Eastleigh again, but he was unsuccessful and has now decided against standing this time round.

His party, which Mr Hall describes as “all-inclusive, anti-austerity” and “neither left or right-wing”, came seventh out of 14 candidates at the 2013 Eastleigh by-election.

Mr Hall, a businessman, said: “It’s unjustified and undemocratic.

“There were 42,000 ballots in the by-election with the name on it and there wasn’t a single complaint.”

Mr Hall says he believes the General Election will result in a hung parliament and has predicted another election later this year.

He says he will bid to overturn the Electoral Commission’s decision on his party’s name in time to stand then.

An Electoral Commission spokesman said: “The law requires the Commission to form an opinion on whether any of these are obscene or offensive, or could cause voter confusion.”
