JAZ Butterworth’s The Winterling and Chloe Moss’s This Wide Night provide a fascinating double bill for this latest show.
Butterworth has produced a play almost more Pinteresque than anything by Pinter himself, with a group of interesting characters gathered in a house in Dartmoor on unspecified business.
Moss’ play is an unsentimental depiction of former cellmates trying to cope with life outside prison.
Although a long evening, at more than three hours, both plays are sharply directed and paced.
Mike Cottrell effectively brings out the darkly funny and the plain dark of Butterworth’s play, producing a crisp style that gives full power to the pump-action dialogue.
This is an ensemble piece of great power.
This Wide Night had its moments, but felt more emotional drama than comedy, and gained in emotional depth as the play progressed.
Amy Fitzgibbon (Lorraine) and Cat Lewis (Marie) made an impressive duo.
