The value of placing life-saving defibrillator machines in public places grows ever more apparent.

This paper has for some time now backed a campaign to place a defibrillator in every school in the county.

Today we report on how quick-thinking customers at an Asda store helped save a man’s life using a machine that was only recently fitted.

There can be little doubt that myths that defibrillator machines can only be used with very specialist training are being removed as the evidence grows that their installation leads to more lives being saved.

And while we are to continue with our campaign calling on local companies to adopt nearby schools to help fund machines, we recognise there should also be consideration given to placing defibrillators in stores, entertainment venues and anywhere where the public gathers in numbers.

The machines are relatively inexpensive, training can easily be given, lives can and are being saved.

The facts and figures continue to underscore the value of this paper’s campaign.
