DESCENDANTS of Southampton sailors lost on Titanic were among those who gathered in the city yesterday to commemorate the 95th anniversary of the tragedy.
Hundreds assembled beside one of Southampton's Titanic memorials to remember the 1,523 people who lost their lives after the "unsinkable" liner struck an iceberg and slipped below the waves.
More than 500 of those who died in the disaster had lived in Southampton which at the time was plunged into deep mourning.
Those attending the service included Erick Roberton, 70, of Grosvenor Square, Southampton, whose uncle, George Roberton, was a 19-year-old steward on Titanic.
Bob Burr, 65, of Hobson Way, Holbury, attended the service to remember his grandfather Ewart Burr, who was a 28-year-old saloon steward on the ship.
The service was held in front of the Titanic engineers' memorial in East Park, Above Bar Street.
