Southampton’s junior sports stars were honoured at a glittering ceremony at the Guildhall.
The Southampton City Sports awards 2015 saluted the top teams and individuals from primary and secondary schools across 14 sports.
More than 100 awards were made during the evening compered by Daisy Robinson, who also thanked all the staff and volunteers that had supported sports events during the last academic year.
Southampton school games organisers, Amy Rodger and Basia Dudek, welcomed VIP guest, paralympian Aaron Phipps to present the awards.
Aaron, from Southampton, was 15 years old when he contracted Meningitis C and Meningococcal Septicemia which led to him losing both legs and most of his fingers through amputations. He refused to let this horrific experience beat him and in 2007 he competed in a local 10k which spurred him onto competing in other races including the London Marathon. In 2009 Aaron took up Wheelchair Rugby where his passion for fitness benefited his career and he competed in the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Big winners on the night were Springhill Catholic Primary School who earned multiple awards in tennis, table tennis, badminton, cricket, hockey, football, athletics and swimming.
Among the secondary schools St George Catholic College were great all-round achievers, lifting trophies in rugby, cricket, rounders, netball, basketball and rounders while Upper Shirley High scored major successes in the team track and field events.
St George’s achieved the Sainsbury’s School Games Mark for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport and physical education. Silver and Bronze awards went to Oakwood Primary and Townhill Junior respectively.
Valentine Primary School in Sholing won the Fair Play Award.
