HIGHTOWN fire station in Southampton opened its doors to the public in aid of charity.
Highlights included a mock rescue, complete with artificial smoke, in which firefighters using ladders rescued a damsel in distress.
Firefighters also showcased their hose skills, to the enjoyment of the watching crowds.
The open day, which basked in glorious sunshine, also provided visitors with a chance to dress up as a firefighter, so they could see just how heavy the gear is.
More than 2,000 people attended the event, which is thought to have raised a large sum for The Fire Fighters’ Charity, which supports colleagues and their families, and the Rainbow Trust, which helps couples with a seriously ill child.
Some of the firefighting equipment on show was supplied by crews based at the Redbridge and St Mary’s fire stations, in the city.
