This is the tiger that has 'took the glory' away from Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn during his first Prime Minister's Questions session.

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner raised the issue about Simi, an eight-year-old tiger who cannot be rehomed on the island because of 'red tape'.

The unusual question took the limelight away from Corbyn, 66, who was crowned the new Labour Party leader on Saturday.

Laughter even erupted in the House of Commons when Mr Turner brought up the subject of the Isle of Wight Zoo's attempt to rescue the tiger.

The Conservative MP said the zoo in Sandown, Isle of Wight, faced a 'bureaucratic log jam' and wanted the Prime Minister's help getting her to the island.

He asked: "Will my right honourable friend assist in breaking through this bureaucratic log jam?"

House of Commons speaker John Bercow broke up proceedings by saying: "I want to hear more about the tiger."

Zoo director Charlotte Corney contacted her local MP last month to raise the issue involving Simi, but had no idea he would raise the matter today.

The 39-year-old said: "The situation is ongoing, hence the fact we have got our local MP involved in the negotiations.

"But we have been unable to get Simi here from Belgium because of red tape."

The Isle of Wight Zoo rescues big cats and gives them a new home but Miss Corney needs a rabies waiver to get the tiger from Belgium to the UK.

Miss Corney, from Sandown, added: "I was unaware Andrew Turner was going to raise it at this Prime Minister's Questions.

"Hopefully today will act as catalyst and we can get Simi here."

She added: "Jeremy Corbyn might be slightly upset about a tiger steaming in there and taking some of his glory.

"But seriously, I think wildlife should move further up the political agenda.

"This animal was identified by an agency we work with and they said she needs a home and I replied saying we have the room."

She contacted Mr Turner one month ago and has only spoken to him a 'handful of times' about the situation.

Miss Corney added: "As far I was aware, the matter was going to be tabled in October, I didn't know it was going to be raised today.

"He must feel it is important for the Isle of Wight and that it would be good for island tourism.

"We are now hoping David Cameron will put pressure on Defra who will look into the case again and we hope to have Simi on the island soon."

Mr Cameron replied to Mr Turner: "I will certainly do anything I can to help. We will help with the Defra Animal and Plant Health Agency as they are the ones working on this.

"I had a constituency case exactly like this - with the Cotswold Wildlife Park wanting to bring in a Rhino.

"I intervened and I'm delighted to say the park named the rhino Nancy, in honour of my daughter."
