IT IS the city I love and I will do it proud.

That was the message today from the new Miss Southampton as she set her sights on becoming Miss England.

The glamorous 17-year-old saw off competition from 18 other beautiful young women at St Mary's Stadium.

Organisers have tipped her to as a strong contender for the national crown when the final takes place in Leicester next month.

She told the Daily Echo: "I'm really looking forward to representing Southampton at the Miss England finals and raising lots of money for charities and good causes in the city, which is what it is all about."

Hitting back at criticism that she should not be eligible to enter the contest because she lives in Bournemouth, massive Saints fan Chelsea said: "I spend so much time in the city and love coming here that it's like my second home."

Chelsea is optimistic about Saints' promotion battle and will be back at St Mary's tomorrow for the crucial clash against Southend United, in which the side can claim a play-off place.

She said: "I am a really big Saints fan and so are my parents. We have season tickets for St Mary's and I have been supporting them since I was very little and they played at The Dell."

Chelsea is studying performing arts, ICT and business studies and has ambitions of being a singer or an IT director.

Modelhub, the organisers of the Miss Southampton regional heat of Miss England, praised the contestants who took part in the glitzy black tie event.

Spokesman Lee Collier said that the busy night attracted plenty of attention and it was natural there was a debate over who should take the crown for Southampton this year.

He told the Daily Echo: "The rules for the competition are laid down by Miss World organisers and anyone from anywhere in the UK can enter the event.

"Chelsea is a great representative for Southampton and was delighted to be at St Mary's, where her favourite football team plays.

"Five of the seven judges picked Chelsea as their first choice, and the remaining two had her in second place.

"She was a clear winner for the judges and beat the nearest competitor by seven points."

Judges on the night were Daily Echo reporter Corey Stephenson, Miss England 2006 Eleanor Glynn, Miss Southampton 2006 Joanne Jones, Top Cutz salon owner Jason Insch, Saints captain Claus Lundekvam, Saints acting chairman Leon Crouch and Saints business development manager John O'Sullivan.

A spokesman for Saints said the club had nothing to do with the competition other than providing the venue.
