A MAJOR Hampshire road was closed  after a lorry got stuck under a bridge.

The huge truck stopped on the A35 Totton bypass near Rushington roundabout, under a pedestrian bridge.

It became stuck at about 10am and one lane of the westbound carriageway was blocked until shortly before 12pm yesterday causing traffic tailbacks.

Police were forced to close Redbridge Causeway heading westbound so the lorry could be manoeuvred off the road.

Lynda Haynes of Fisher Road, said it is "ridiculous" that things like this continue to happen.

"This road is becoming so dangerous," said the 60 year-old.

"This is not the first time something involving a lorry has happened on the main road.

"I mean there are children who use this road everyday and if there was somebody on the bridge they could have been seriously hurt."

Once the lorry was freed from under the bridge, the lorry was driven back up the road by police on the wrong side of the carrigeway, so they could turn it around.

Daily Echo:

A passer-by said: "Thankfully it wasn't a whole lot worse.

"Obviously this is something that was avoidable but it must have just been an error in judgement."

A spokesman from Hampshire police said: "There's a lorry that is too big to pass under the overhead bridge on the A35 out of Southampton.

"We're facilitating and assisting the lorry to reverse back up the road and sort itself out."
