If panto isn’t your thing, December at Turner Sims is packed with musical treasures to get you feeling festive this Christmas.

Start the month with one of Bach’s great masterpieces as acclaimed harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani performs the composer’s Goldberg Variations on Thursday. One of Bach’s greatest masterpieces, the Goldberg Variations were dedicated to the composer’s friend Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who needed a piece of music to help put his insomniac master to sleep at night. First published in 1741 and originally composed for harpsichord, the Goldbergs have since been performed and recorded by an array of instruments and combinations. Mahan Esfahani, who in 2011 gave the first-ever solo harpsichord recital in the BBC Proms’ 116-year history with an acclaimed performance of the work now brings his captivating interpretation to Turner Sims.

Spend the following night with Mercury nominated jazz outfit Polar Bear as they perform from their latest project Same As You, which follows last year’s critically lauded In Each and Every One. Led by the incredibly gifted drummer Seb Rochford (who’s worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Beck and Adele) they continue to explore and push the boundaries of jazz.

World famous baroque quartet Red Priest present their Winter Baroque Carnival, a feast of seasonal music, on Thursday December 10. The evening will include Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, Vivaldi’s Winter from the Four Seasons, Van Eyck’s Carol Variations and a suite from Handel’s Messiah. Led by recorder playing maestro Piers Adams, they perform in their own inimitable, high-octane style.

Folk favourites The Mellstock Band celebrate Christmas with The Leaves of Life, a warming selection of carols and revels, readings and humour in the English tradition on Sunday December 13. Expect everything from carols to revels and from alehouse to church gallery.
