IT'S the world's best-known sailing regatta and a highlight of the British sporting calendar each summer.

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week returns to the Solent from tomorrow.

The event stages over 40 daily races for up to 1,000 boats. The 8,500 competitors range from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors. In excess of 100,000 spectators come to Cowes to watch the racing, enjoy the parties and live entertainment, and to experience the unique atmosphere.

The world famous Red Arrows will provide a breath-taking aerobatic display on Thursday, alongside the RAF Typhoon, who also take to the skies, while the famous Cowes Week fireworks wrap up the event on Friday night.

Following a pre-launch day today, Cowes Week proper will get under way with a host of carnival themed activities and the Royal Yacht Squadron Ball.

This year's programme also includes a family fun day on Sunday and ladies are encouraged to dress in nautical navy and white for Ladies Day on Tuesday.

Cowes Week has been held in early August every year since 1826, except during the two world wars.

Traditionally, it takes place after Glorious Goodwood and before the Glorious Twelfth, the first day of the grouse shooting season. Although occasionally the traditional dates are changed to ensure optimum racing, taking account of the tides or, as in 2012, to avoid a clash with the Olympic Games.

Over the years the event has attracted British and foreign royalty, and many famous faces.
