THOUSANDS more children in Southampton have been better protected against flu after a vaccination programme was expanded to include more school children in the city.

The flu nasal spray vaccination programme this year included children aged seven and eight in school Year 3, in Southampton, protecting thousands more children from flu this winter.

School nurses from Solent NHS Trust gave the nasal spray vaccine to an average of 61per cent of children in Years 1, 2 and 3 across the city.

It is hoped the expanded programme will mean less children will be hit with flu this winter, and will also help to relieve pressure on the NHS at a crucial time of year when it has to deal with a high number of potentially avoidable A&E presentations, hospital admissions and GP visits.

The programme will also offer protection from flu to thousands more siblings, parents, grandparents and others across the city who might previously have been exposed to flu as a result of children becoming ill.

Kate Slater, public health programme lead at Solent NHS Trust, said: “I would like to thank our school nursing team for their dedication in delivering what was a major expansion of the school flu nasal spray vaccine programme, helping to protect thousands more children in the city from the flu.

“This vital work will also contribute to stopping the spread of the virus to the most vulnerable people in the city for whom flu can be a serious and life-threatening illness.”

In addition to the primary school programme, the free flu vaccine is available for children that are two, three or four years old.

"Adults over the age of 65, with long-term health conditions (such as asthma or diabetes) and carers are also eligible.

Appointments are available to book a free flu jab – or nasal spray for children – with local GPs or pharmacies.

Councillor Dave Shields, Cabinet Member for Health at Southampton City Council, said: “Winter can be a challenging time of year for the most vulnerable people in our communities.

"I urge residents to ensure they look out for their elderly and vulnerable neighbours as temperatures drop to ensure they have everything they need to keep warm and well this winter.”
