A HAMPSHIRE councillor and his family have fled a 'severe' blaze at their home.

Nick Adams-King, a Conservative who represents Blackwater ward on Test Valley Borough Council, took to Twitter after the blaze in his Romsey home.

No one was injured, but the house is "two-thirds" destroyed, he said.

Six fire engines were called to the property in Stanbridge Lane, Awbridge at around 8.45pm.

The ground floor, first floor and roof of the building were severely damaged by fire.

An ambulance was called to the scene at 9.15pm but none of the residents needed hospital treatment.

In total six fire engines attended the scene from Romsey, St Mary’s, Redbridge, Totton and Eastleigh.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The family involved were outside when we arrived.

"Thankfully they had working smoke alarms which gave them early warning and enabled them to safely evacuate. They also had a plan of what to do in an emergency.

"We contacted the British Red Cross who supported the family while our firefighters tackled the fire."

Nearby resident, Georgie Jones,20, said: “ I came back from Southampton and I saw there were fire engines on the road, but the fire  was put out already.”
