A Hampshire journalist and her former school friends have run five kilometres to raise money for charity.

Sky news reporter, Angela Barnes alongside 19 of her former Thornden School friends ran at the event to raise money for Sophie's Appeal.

The reporter became associated with the charity after meeting Sophie's mother at a fundraising event.

After hearing about six-year-old Sophie's battle with Wilm's Disease, a form of kidney cancer, she became inspired to raise money for the charity which supports treatment and research.

Sophie's Appeal became a registered charity in 2005 and since has raised more that £450k.

The charity previously funded a research project at Southampton General Hospital headed up by Sophie’s consultant Dr Jan Kohler, the project made groundbreaking research that was published worldwide.

Sophie's mum Lin Barringer said she thought Angela was "crazy" when she contacted her to tell her about it.

"Having been a supporter of Sophie's Appeal for several years she said she wanted to raise money and awareness for a charity that had become close to her heart," said the mother from Eastleigh.

"Sophie was diagnosed with Wilms disease, a rare form of kidney cancer in 2003, she lost her battle on 9 Dec 2014, she was 6.5yrs old.

"Sophie, throughout her illness was always wanting to help in her words "all the other poorly children"

"Birthdays are always hard for myself and Mike, Sophie's Dad, it got me thinking wouldn't it be fun if we recognised what would have been Sophie's 19th birthday on 3rd March if we got 19 people to run with Angie.

"What started as a thought in my head has now become a reality.

"We have raised in excess of £450k for support treatment and research and that is thanks to the generosity of our community.

"Sophie, I'm sure would be so proud of what we have achieved in her memory. Turning our grief and loss, into something positive is what keeps us going."

Angela will be running 5k every day for the rest of the year in hopes of raising as much money as possible for Sophie's appeal.
