A MAN jailed for pretending to be a police officer and harassing his ex-girlfriend has been cleared after his conviction was overturned.

Terry David Waymark walked free from prison on Thursday night after serving almost nine weeks of his 24-week sentence.

The 35-year-old said there were moments when he did not think he would be able to make it through, while serving time behind bars at HMP Bullingdon, in Bicester.

The Daily Echo previously reported Mr Waymark’s case when he appeared before Southampton Magistrates’ Court at the beginning of this year.

Mr Waymark, of Landguard Road, Southampton, who said he had 69 previous convictions, spoke to the Echo about his experience in prison waiting for the appeal date where he was able to present evidence to the court proving his innocence.

Mr Waymark was accused of making the woman’s life a misery by repeatedly calling and sending her unwanted letters after she broke up with him when she discovered he was a phoney.

During their relationship the court was told he told the victim and her family he was a police officer, pretending that a radio he had was for work.

The father-of-three said there had been a misunderstanding and that his ex-girlfriend, who he claimed was seven months pregnant with his child, had been sending him letters and visiting him while he was remanded in custody for the offence.

He added he was not stalking her.

Mr Waymark said he now plans to launch a charity called Don’t Judge to raise awareness of people who have been wrongly convicted.

He added he had already been in contact with other charities which could give him support and plans to launch a Facebook page too.

Mr Waymark said: “I didn’t think I was going to make it.

“You would be locked up in your cell all day on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

“On the other days you would only be allowed out between 8am and 9am and 4pm and 6pm.

“I want to raise awareness as I feel I was judged on my previous convictions.

“People should not be judged on that.“I did not think I would win it with all my previous convictions - I am just relieved its over.“When I was released from prison at 10pm, I had to walk five miles to a shop where I could call a taxi to a train station.”
