HUNDREDS of Hampshire pupils fell silent to help people with cancer.

Students from Berrywood school in Hedge End and St Winifred’s School in Southampton put their fingers on their lips to take part in a sponsored silence in aid of the Breast Cancer Haven Wessex.

More than 350 youngsters took up the challenge to raise money for the charity which helps those battling breast cancer along with their families and friends.

St Winifred’s School head girl Isla Osman said she and her friends had volunteered to do the silence due to the high number of friends whose families have been affected by the disease.

Meanwhile, students at Berrywood school ran the sponsored silence for the second year running.

As previously reported, Berrywood pupil Archie Kill raised £2,200 with his school friends last year after his mum Sally was diagnosed with the disease. Sally is now in remission but the school decided to support the charity again.

Breast Cancer Haven Wessex has also been chosen as WestQuay’s charity of the year and will be running a portrait competition to find the county’s budding artists, with a prize of vouchers for top restaurant Nando’s. If you would like to send in your entry contact Heidi Rehman or Gary Thomasson at the Haven on 01329 559303.
