IT’S not too late to take part in Southampton’s biggest running event.

That’s the message from local charities which have spaces available for runners who missed the deadline for the ABP Southampton Marathon, half marathon and 10k.

About 10,000 people are expected to take part in the runs, which will be held in Southampton on April 23.

The routes will see runners pound the streets of Southampton, taking in landmarks such as St Mary’s Stadium and the Itchen Bridge.

Although entries officially closed on March 20, some charities bought spaces in advance and still have places left for runners who missed the deadline.

Among them is the ABP Southampton Marathon’s lead national charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

Riona Doidge, from the charity, said: “We are proud to be involved with this fantastic event.

“By 2030, the number of people living with cancer in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will fill Southampton FC’s football stadium nearly four times.

“We already have over 400 runners signed up to run for people with cancer, and there is still time to join Team Macmillan.

“We expect our runners to raise over £60,000 and the money raised will have a huge impact on the services we can provide. With their help we can make sure no one faces cancer alone.”

Other charities with spaces available include Naomi House & Jacksplace, Ben’s Heroes Trust, Southampton Hospitals Charity and the RSPB.

Race director Chris Rees said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for those who missed the deadline to get a place in this year’s event.

“What’s more, they will be raising money for some very worthy causes by taking part as a charity runner.

“I would urge anyone who hasn’t yet signed up to check out our website for details of how they can secure one of these last few spaces.”
