A PLAN to turn a council garage court and some green space in a Hampshire village into six homes has been approved.

The proposal for six affordable homes in Coles Mede, Otterbourne, has been met with some resistance by residents.

The site is situated next to a piece of public green space, and councillors heard that there is another application to turn this into a village green, but a decision on this won’t be determined until 2018.

Ten letters of objection were received by Winchester City Council. with concerns being a lack of parking, highway safety, loss of green space and overdevelopment.

The plans include two three-bedroom homes, two two-bedroom homes and two one-bedroom flats.

Councillor Peter North said the application would only build on 12 per cent of the green space and was much-needed.

Against was Peter North, who said: “We believe that the scheme which will replace rather ugly garages would enhance the area and provide much needed affordable accommodation.”

Against the plans, Phillip Larby, said a decision should be delayed due to the village green application and the outcome of the Gladman Developments planning appeal which will decide whether 90 homes are built in Otterbourne.

Mr Larby added a number objections were not received by Winchester City Council, but councillor Ian Tait said these accusations were baseless.

Cllr Tait supported the plan “wholeheartedly” Cllr Tait said: “It is an excellent application and delivers much needed affordable housing I see no negatives at all.”

Eight councillors voted in favour and one against.
