HUNDREDS of runners took to the streets of a Hampshire village this morning to enjoy a race with a boozy finish.

Around 350 people pounded the streets in and around Braishfield for the Romsey Five Mile Beer Race.

The event which is in its 31st year has become ncreasingly popular and this year it was sold out months before it started, it is famous for the fact runners get to enjoy a pint when the race finishes.

This year the beer was supplied by local brewery Flack Manor.

There was a sombre mood before the race kicked off at Braishfield Cricket Field, as runners from various clubs held a minute's silence at the starting line to remember those who died in the terror attack in London.

But it didn't stop villagers coming out and cheering on the runners, as many gathered close to the village hall and lined the streets to offer the runners shouts of encouragement.

The winner of the race in the men's category was Jim Davies, 34, from Shirley in Southampton who is a member of Southampton Athletics Club, he finished in 27 minutes 47 seconds, while first in the women's section was Sarah Winstone,30 , from Shirley of Lordshill Road Runners who had a personal best time of 31 minutes and 38 seconds.
