PUPILS at a Hampshire school had a close encounter with some of the region’s freshest food when a fishmonger brought in his catch.

The youngsters at Berrywood Primary School got their hands on some very slippery fish with J&S Fresh Fish’s catch of the day.

The children at the Hedge End school even got stuck in with de-boning and filleting a fish before tucking into strawberries and local fruit.

Experts from New Forest Fruits explained how strawberries have been grown in Hampshire for decades while a representative from Naked Jam gave the children tips on how to forage for themselves.

Kids were also given the low-down on yeasts and artisan bread from Honesty Group.

Head teacher Chris Reilly said: “The children had a fantastic morning learning about British produce.

“As a school we are trying very hard to promote healthy eating from environmentally friendly and sustainable sources.

“This is an excellent project.”

It was all part of British Food Fortnight and organised by Hampshire Fare.
