CIVIC chiefs are set to discuss plans for a Christmas ice rink and Alpine-themed bar in Southampton.

Proposals for the temporary facility at WestQuay will go before members of the city council’s planning committee today.

It is is recommended that the plans, submitted by operators SKATE, are given the green-light.

Planning chiefs say the winter wonderland, which could be installed in the shopping centre’s outdoor plaza, will provide “social, economic and cultural benefits”.

However, concerns have been raised by groups such as Historic England about the impact it might have on the adjacent Town Walls.

The rink, if approved, would be in place for seven weeks from November 11.
