A HAMPSHIRE resident has been shortlisted for a prestigious honour at a national Dementia awards ceremony.

Kerry Chambers from Portchester has been selected as one of three finalists in the Dementia Friends Champion of the Year category at the Alzheimer Charity's National Dementia friendly awards, which recognise contributions to combating Alzheimer's in Society through 13 awards across 10 categories.

Meanwhile, Kerry's category recognises the action taken by Dementia Friends Champions to raise awareness, challenge misperceptions and inspire change through running Information Sessions.

Kerry has been an active member of the Southern Regional and National Dementia Friends Champions Forums and has created more than 400 Dementia Friends across the region, who help to raise awareness of Alzheimer's.

She is also a member of the Fareham and Gosport dementia action group, helping to contribute to her local community.

Talking about his nomination, Kerry said: "My late grandmother was living with dementia and if I knew then what I know now then it would have made things clearer and easier for me to understand.

"The work that I do for Dementia Friends is because I have a passion for the cause and am keen for as many people as possible to have a greater understanding of this disease.

"Although I don't do it for the awards, I would feel immensely proud of what I have achieved if I did win."

Nick O’Donohue, Alzheimer’s Society operations manager for Hampshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, added: "I am delighted that Kerry has been selected and this is evidence of the brilliant dementia friendly work going on in Hampshire."

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Wednesday, November 29.
