RESIDENTS have voiced their anger after civic bosses announced that a Romsey road was to be closed for up to three months.

Part of Braishfield Road from its junction with Winchester is to be shut from January 8 for three months for a signal junction to be put in place.

Town community members have taken to social media to vent their frustrations after the announcement by Hampshire County Council.

Questioning the length of time for the traffic lights to be put in place, and the cost, others have asked why a roundabout couldn't be placed there instead.

One resident said: "Three months for traffic lights? Waste of time and effort."

Another posted: "That is going to cause so much more traffic build-up when there are lights in place. Complete waste of money."

According to the closure notice, dated from December 22, the closure is from 'part of Braishfield Road in Romsey from its junction with Winchester Road to a point 40 metres north thereof'.

Transport bosses have reassured residents that disruption will be minimised during the works.

Executive member for environment and transport at Hampshire County Council, Rob Humby, said: “These works are part of the improvements agreed with the developer as part of the planning condition for Abbotswood, and the developer will cover the cost.

“During the works, access to Braishfield Road from the A3090 will need to be closed. I would like to reassure residents that we will work closely with the contractor to minimise disruption during the works and thank people, in advance, for their patience.”
