Fire crews had to rush to a Bursledon home last night after a tumble dryer was found on fire.

Days after MPs warned there could be up to one million defective tumble dryers in UK homes, two engines from Hightown fire station raced to Boundary Road to put out a kitchen fire.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: "Two engines were called to the address at 5.11pm yesterday evening for a small kitchen fire.

"One hose reel was used and no-one was injured. The stop message came at 5.32pm."

On social media, Hightown advised owners of the dryers to 'never leave it, clear out the fluff and keep it clear of clutter'.

Earlier this week, MPs warned of the potentially defective appliances after an 'inadequate' response by Whirlpool after an error was found as fluff could catch fire in a heating element.

The company own both the Indest and Hotpoint brands.

A Whirlpool statement said:"After two years of extensive measures to raise awareness to this campaign - including directly contacting four million owners of these appliances - the number of consumers coming forward has fallen sharply.
