CONTROVERSIAL plans for a new housing development in a Hampshire village have sparked more than 200 protests.

Objections flooded in to Eastleigh Borough Council, which has received an application to build up to 70 new homes and associated open spaces on land at Satchell Lane in Hamble.

Councillors and planning chiefs are now set to discuss the proposals during a meeting which will take place on September 21.

An official report issued by the Bursledon, Hamble and Hound Local Area Committee ahead the meeting, has revealed that a total of 203 letters of objection and one letter of observation have been received.

Objectors stressed that the development is “out of context” and not needed in the area and it will “destroy Hamble’s character as a small village.”

Concerns have also been raised about the impact it could have on traffic and comments highlighted that it would put additional pressure on the junction of Satchell Lane with Hamble Lane which has deemed to be “already overloaded and dangerous, particularly at peak times.”

The authority is expected to reject the planning application on the grounds that the proposal represents an “inappropriate and unjustified form of development which would have an unacceptably urbanising and visually intrusive impact upon the designated countryside, to the detriment of the character, visual amenity, and the quality of the landscape, of the locality.”

All the plans previously submitted to the borough council to build residential developments on land at Satchell Lane were thrown out.

Elizabeth Lear, opposition councillor for Hamble ward, said she has not looked at the details of the proposed planning application yet and added: “I cannot believe that I would be voting for it as I have not voted for any of the other developments, but as I said I have not yet made a decision as I need to read all the details and listen to the arguments at the LAC next week.”

The developer was contacted by the Daily Echo but was not able to provide a comment when the Echo went to press.
