A MAN has been arrested after a raid at Southampton KFC - in which a staff member was sprayed in the face with an "unknown substance".

Officers say they have arrested a 23-year-old from Southampton on suspicion of robbery, following an incident at KFC in Bursledon Road.

It took place around 8.45pm on Monday, April 2.

A robber entered the chicken shop and demanded money from staff.

During the incident, a man in his 20s was sprayed in the face with an "unknown substance".

He suffered a rash-like reaction, according to police.

Last night, police forensic teams were awaiting test results to identify the mystery liquid.

However, Hampshire Constabulary have ruled out the possibility of an acid attack, instead describing it as a “noxious substance”.

Yesterday, KFC bosses told of their shock about the incident.

A spokesperson for the fast food chain said: “We are really glad no-one was hurt.

“We’re working closely with the local police as they investigate and are offering full support to all team members who were on shift that night.”

Southampton City Council ward member for Bitterne, Councillor Frances Murphy said: “I find it absolutely appalling.”

Councillor Murphy’s Bitterne colleague, Councillor John Jordan, also expressed concern at the incident.

He told the Echo: “These isolated incidents thankfully are rare.

“But this must have been terrible for the victim, particularly not knowing what it is.

“I have a lot of sympathy for the victim and I urge anyone with any information to come forward to the police."

A hazardous area response team and paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service rushed to the incident.

Crews from Hightown and Winchester fire stations also attended the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44180121237.
