ARMED police were called to a Southampton neighbourhood after an incident last night.

Residents of Union Road, Northam, told the Daily Echo that they heard gunshots and saw about 15 police cars in the area at about 10pm.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed that armed police were called after reports of an assault.

A statement says: "A 38-year-old man from Southampton suffered serious injuries to his hand and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

"A 39-year-old woman from Southampton was also injured but did not require hospital treatment.

"Due to the information provided to us, a decision was made to deploy armed officers to the scene.

"A 42-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in custody at this time."

A resident said armed officers pointed their guns to the window of one of the houses in Union Road shouting “get out”.

People living in the street were told to stay inside.

The Daily Echo was told that a woman who was inside the house was taken away and officers raided the property and took a man with them.

Hampshire Police has been approached for a comment but has not yet responded.
