CONTROVERSIAL plans to create a replacement rear extension at a Winchester home have been approved, despite a number of objections.
The single-storey extension to the home at Church Cottage, 20 St John’s Street, will now be replaced, but with a second storey added to part of it.
Neighbours argued that the plans would result in a loss of light, would be out of character and that it would create overbearing and intrusive views from the neighbouring churchyard.
Tony Kenyon, an artist who paint in his conservatory in the neighbouring property, wrote in his objection: “The bright daylight conditions are ideal, particularly for watercolour work. This was a key reason for buying the property in 1996.
“The towering mass of the extension would... give rise to significant shadowing.”
Despite this, councillors voted through the scheme at Winchester City Council’s planning committee.
