A FEMALE pedestrian has been seriously injured in an accident on a busy Hampshire road.

The collision occurred on the A35 Totton Bypass, close to its junction with the Rushington roundabout, at about 7.30am today.

The casualty was treated at the scene before being taken to Southampton General Hospital.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said she suffered "serious" injuries in the collision, which involved a Vauxhall car.

A SCAS spokesman said: "We sent two ambulances and an air ambulance. The pedestrian was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a land ambulance, accompanied by the air crew."

No information has been released about the age of the casualty or the nature of her injuries.

Police were called to the scene at 7.40am and closed one of the eastbound lanes of the A35, resulting in delays of at least 40 minutes.

Cars, coaches and lorries all sat queueing in long tailbacks that stretched towards Ashurst.
