THOUSANDS of festival-goers set to party on Southampton Common this weekend will get the chance to watch England’s crunch World Cup quarter-final match.

Organisers of retro festival Let’s Rock Southampton have announced plans for a giant screen at the event on Saturday – but one place fans will not be able to watch is at the city’s Westquay centre.

The screen at Let’s Rock will show England’s World Cup quarter-final game with Sweden, which kicks off at 3pm.

The announcement was made on Twitter just hours after England won their first ever World Cup penalty shoot-out, beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties, after a 1-1 draw in Moscow.

In an online post, organisers said: “Before you ask, yes we have a screen to show the match on Saturday.”

Alongside the football, festival-goers at Let’s Rock will have plenty of live music acts to chose from.

Heading the line-up will be Adam Ant, with other confirmed acts including

Sister Sledge, ABC and Midge Ure.

Go West, Kim Appleby, Sara Cox Presents Just Can’t Get Enough 80s,  Snap! Heather Small, The Blockheads and Transvision Vamp’s Wendy James are some of the other names on the list.

The action-packed one-day musical extravaganza will also feature The Smash Hits Party Live: Hazel Dean, Fuzzbox, Bow Wow Wow’s Annabella, Brother Beyond, Peter Coyle ex Lotus Eaters and Black Lace’s Conga Party.

Gates open at 10am with music from noon.

Westquay is showing Wimbledon live on a big screen throughout the tournament, but a spokesman told the Daily Echo there were no plans to extend this to football.

Matches are being screened at the nearby Showcase Cinema de Lux.

Meanwhile, Theresa May has said she could not bear to watch the penalty shootout that saw England progress to the World Cup quarter-finals.

The Prime Minister found the tension too much as Gareth Southgate’s team’s tie with Colombia came down to the spot-kick finale.

A Downing Street source said Mrs May watched some of the match but added: “She actually said earlier she struggles to watch penalties because it’s a nerve-wracking time.”

At Prime Minister’s Questions, Mrs May praised the Three Lions.
