SOUTHAMPTON will not be getting a big screen for England's World Cup semi final game, it has been confirmed.

The Three Lions have delighted fans across the country by progressing to England's first World Cup semi final since 1990, and cities including London, Leeds and Newcastle have seen large screens erected for fans to watch the action.

A Daily Echo website poll found that of 2,216 votes, 88 per cent were in favour of a screen being set up in Southampton.

But Southampton City Council has now confirmed that this will not happen.

A statement says: "It has been great to see England make it to the semi-finals in the World Cup.

"We have started to investigate the possibility of erecting a large screen in the city, should the team make it through to the final.

"Due to logistics, safety concerns and a lack of availability of suitable city centre spaces that we can use to host an event of this size and nature, we are unfortunately unable to commit to a large screen for the mid-week match, at short notice.

"There are many local businesses who will be screening Wednesday’s semi-final, for everyone to enjoy."
