A 'PAWS in the park' event has been cancelled due to concerns that hot weather could make it unsafe for pets.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance had planned the event at Lepe Country on Saturday to raise funds for the service.

The Met Office says temperatures of up to 24C are expected at the weekend, along with blazing sunshine.

Organisers are asking people who wanted to take part to complete a three or five mile walk at the time of their choosing.

Walkers can then take a picture of their walk and send it in to get a medal in return.

A statement says: "We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause, but we hope you’ll understand that we have to put the safety of our participants and dogs, first.

"With temperatures set to stay high, we have taken advice from other local vets and charities about keeping your canines safe in this heat.

"Thank you again for choosing to support Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

"Please stay safe and we look forward to seeing your walks on our social media page."
