THOUSANDS lined the streets as a Hampshire town went carnival crazy yesterday.

A colourful procession of floats made their way through the centre of Romsey, watched by cheering crowds who packed every vantage point along the route.

One of the floats was the cream-coloured double-decker that conveyed the Saints team through Southampton after their FA Cup triumph in 1976.

This year’s carnival queen was Ellie Luffman, 15, who goes to The Romsey School. She was accompanied by her attendant, nine-year-old Kestrel Marsh, a pupil of Braishfield Primary School.

They were transported through the town in Trigger the Train, driven by Roy Rogers, 67, of Sholing.

The roadworthy train, which is capable of 60mph, was built for Hedge End Carnival in 1990 and has appeared in shows across Hampshire ever since.

Roy named it Trigger after his actor namesake, who appeared in countless cowboy films and often rode a horse called Trigger.

The Senior Carnival Queen was Allison Little, 63, who works at Bradbeers department store. Her attendant was her 14-year-old grand-daughter Ella.

Groups taking part included the Air Training Corps 1391 (Romsey) Squadron,

while members of the 2nd Romsey Rainbows were dressed as parrots and called their float Tropical Rainbow Forest.

The Star Inn marked the 70th anniversary of the NHS and the girls’ section of Romsey Town Youth Football Club used the carnival to celebrate Girl Power.
