SHOCKED residents of a Southampton street have spoken out after a woman was injured in a shooting in the city.

Gunshots were heard around 6.20pm last night (August 20) at an address on Cuckmere Lane, Southampton.

Armed officers swooped on the scene, where they found a woman  had suffered serious gunshot wounds in the incident.

The woman was taken to Southampton General Hospital to be treated for serious but not life threatening injuries.

One shocked resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Echo: “It's terrifying to think this has happened in this area.

“As a parent living here it is really concerning.

"There have been problems with drug dealers in the area before but nothing like this.”

Another said: “I saw loads of police cars as I was walking back and couldn’t believe how many were there.

"It's a worry for people here.”

One resident added: "There was an armed response team which was pretty scary as well as loads of police cars, ambulances and other emergency services."

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man from Southampton on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 6.18pm on 20 August to an address in Cuckmere Lane, Southampton, where a woman had received gunshot wounds.

"She was taken to Southampton General Hospital. Her injuries are serious but not believed to be life-threatening.

"A 31-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in police custody at this time.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service added: "The woman was not seriously injured and after treatment at the scene from staff we sent in a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance she was then taken to University Hospital Southampton for further treatment.

"We were called by another person at the property reporting the injury at 6.14pm."
